The Importance of art
Traditionally, art was seen purely as a physical ensemble, however, with a deeper analysis, one can argue that art is not just a physical means, but rather a concept. Anything can be art, it is the expression of emotion, thoughts, and concepts, it is a means of education and connection, it inspires action and sparks innovation, it tells stories, and it acts as an important medium for the preservation of culture.
Art is a medium for self-expression and cultural preservation
Whether it be through visual paintings, mark-making, fashion, musical creations, writing, storytelling and movies, every culture across the globe has been studied to have a deeply engrained relationship to the creation of art. Humans have a conscious and unconscious awareness of our connectedness and interdependence with one another and to nature, we foster an inner need for self-expression. Through this, art is the mechanism that has lured us into using our creative skill and imagination in ways that allow us to express our perceptions of beauty, emotional power and concepts.
The Affect of Art as cultural and societal preservation
Art influences and is influenced by the changing opinions and values of its place and time, acting as a representative of a society’s collective memory. The ability of art to reflect sounds, visuals and emotions of a certain place and time, gives it the ability to instill a deep sense of ‘self’ within people, allowing individuals to identify, connect and communicate with notions that they value.
The emotional impact of art
The persistence of art remaining present in human culture is the fact that it has the power to make us feel. In today’s society, people are constantly trying to find meaning through extrospection ─ examination or observation of what is outside oneself ─ which explains why so many people unknowingly look towards art for meaning, because it makes us feel something, unconsciously forcing ourselves to feel and value our emotions and thoughts through introspection instead. This powerful ability makes it possible for art to act as a vehicle for social change, providing a voice for social and political injustice.
My mother said to me, 'If you are a soldier, you will become a general. If you are a monk, you will become the Pope.' Instead, I was a painter, and became Picasso.
Art and innovation
Artists are highly in tune with being able to observe the world, internalise their observations, and illustrate their observations in such a way that it shifts our already established views and perceptions, allowing us to re-examine our world from a fresh perspective, sparking new opportunities for invention and innovation.
